RELEASE: Do NC Republican LG Candidates Hal Weatherman and Jim O’Neill Agree with Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson on Not Wanting Women to Vote?

Republican Primary Runoff Now Raises Questions on A Woman’s Right to Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As the Republicans in North Carolina this week head to a messy run-off in the Lt. Governor’s race – where both opponents are committed to taking away the right to abortion – news surfaced this week on the incumbent North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson and his stance on the 19th Amendment. Which is: he doesn’t want it to exist anymore.

Huffington Post reports on the claim

But just four years ago, Robinson invoked a bizarre hypothetical in which he said he’d “absolutely” like to return to the days when the 19th Amendment didn’t exist ― when women didn’t have the right to vote.

Back in March 2020, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson made the claim: “I absolutely want to go back to the America where women couldn’t vote.”

As the Republican candidates will head to a runoff in May, North Carolinians now are calling into question: do Jim O’Neill and Hal Weatherman agree with their sitting LG on abolishing the 19th amendment?
“It’s pretty clear how the Lt. Governor’s office in North Carolina has been led by someone with a dangerous and extreme agenda – one where Mark Robinson has worked to take away abortion, oppose Medicaid Expansion, and now, abolish a woman’s right to vote,” said DLGA Executive Director Kevin Holst. “North Carolinans deserve to know if Jim O’Neill and Hal Weatherman will follow in his footsteps, and if they plan to distance themselves from the idea of silencing the 5 million women in North Carolina at the ballot box. It’s pretty clear that no matter who emerges from this messy and chaotic runoff, Rachel Hunt is the only candidate in this race who will protect the basic rights of women and any outlandish future attacks by the Republican Party.”
