WASHINGTON – This week, Democratic Lt. Governors are pushing back against the Trump administration’s efforts to undermine the federal government’s scientific institutions.
In a new letter, spearheaded by Maryland Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, Democratic Lt. Governors are urging the administration to support and safeguard federal science agencies, ensure they are guided by independent science and promote evidence-based policymaking. The letter emphasizes the importance of agencies like NIH, FDA, CDC, NSF, DOE and NASA, and stresses the need for investments for innovation, public health and the economy.
The letter states:
These institutions fuel American innovation—supporting biomedical research, clean energy development, climate science, technology, and space exploration. They also protect our communities, whether by combating infectious diseases, reviewing life-saving medical treatments, or delivering scientific breakthroughs that create jobs and transform industries.
Just as vital is our investment in STEM education. In classrooms, labs, and research institutions across the country, students and scholars are pushing boundaries and reimagining what’s possible. A strong federal commitment to education ensures we remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape and empowers the next generation of scientists, engineers, educators, and public servants.
