Northeastern Democratic Lieutenant Governors convene in New York

New York – Yesterday, Democratic Lieutenant Governors from four Northeastern states met to raise awareness of the newly formed Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA) and to discuss issues affecting Americans both regionally and nationally.

“America’s Democratic Lieutenant Governors are both progressive and pro-growth. When they see overreach or an infringement of civil rights, they will stand together and speak out,” said the group’s Executive Director Roshan Patel.

“A strong and healthy nation requires the leadership of those who are ready to defend our rights to healthcare, eliminate discrimination, and lift the middle class with jobs that pay,” said Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long of Delaware. “Democratic Lt. Governors are being relied upon now more than ever to lead this fight in each of our states.”

“As women’s fundamental rights are being destroyed in state houses all across the country, Democratic Lieutenant Governors stand united in saying this will not happen on our watch,” said New York State Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul. “During this time of unprecedented uncertainty at the federal level, Democratic Lieutenant Governors are more important than ever as we fight to protect the people we serve in our home states.”

“As Democratic Lieutenant Governors, we are committed to building communities that are inclusive of everyone and creating an economy that works for everyone,” said Rhode Island Lt. Governor Dan McKee. “Whether it’s protecting women’s access to health care or finding new ways to unleash opportunity for young people, we want to bring about positive change in our states by bringing people together.”

Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz said, “Across the country, Republicans are hijacking the ability of women to control their own bodies and make their own personal health care decisions.

“My Democratic Lieutenant Governor colleagues and I are committed doing everything possible to combat these extreme policies while working together to develop innovative policy solutions, protect civil rights and advance the interests of women and girls.”

Democratic lieutenant governors serve as a state’s second-in-command and perform critical tasks overseeing civil rights, economic development, trade policy, homeland security, education and overall legislative processes. Lieutenant governors are the only officials with specific duties and powers in two branches of state government: the executive and legislative branches.
