Democratic Lieutenant Governors on death of George Floyd

WASHINGTON — The Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association joins the millions of people across the country and around the world in mourning the tragic death of George Floyd. We stand with those who have taken to the streets to peacefully protest and raise their voices against police brutality and white supremacy.

We recognize that the systems of oppression that have existed for hundreds of years are still a reality in our communities today. These brutalities extend beyond police violence; poverty, healthcare inequities, underfunded public education, environmental conditions are all obstacles our fellow Black citizens face every day. Now is the time to fight against these barriers. We are committed to working together and in our states to challenge these systems and champion policies that uphold decency and respect for human life.

In doing this, we remember Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Botham Jean, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Walter Scott, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, Freddie Gray, Laquan McDonald. We will continue to say their names. We will continue to honor their lives by seeking justice and reforming the systems that allowed these tragedies to happen.
