In the wake of the Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruling that grants Donald Trump immunity for all official acts committed as President, Democratic Lt. Governors Association (DLGA) Chair and Minnesota Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan released the following statement:
“Today, the Supreme Court’s right-wing majority, handpicked by Donald Trump, ruled that he is entirely immune from prosecution for any crimes committed under the guise of ‘official acts.’ This decision is fundamentally contrary to our values as Americans. No one is above the law, not even the President.
“This ruling underscores the urgent need for all of us to engage in the hard work required between now and November 3rd to ensure that Donald Trump never returns to the Oval Office. An emboldened Donald Trump, armed with the knowledge that he is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office, poses a clear and present danger to our democracy.
“As Justice Sotomayor wrote in her dissent, ‘The relationship between the President and the people he serves has shifted irrevocably. In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law.’ As our nation commemorates the declaration of our independence from a king this week, the timing of this decision is deeply ironic and profoundly concerning.”
