WASHINGTON – Delaware Lt. Governor Kyle Evans Gay, Chair of the Democratic Lt. Governors Association (DLGA), released the following statement tonight on Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami being nominated as Hawai‘i’s Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor:
“Derek Kawakami has spent his career showing Hawai‘i what steady, trusted leadership looks like. As Mayor of Kauaʻi, he took on illegal vacation rentals that were pulling homes off the market and pricing local families out of their own neighborhoods. He fought to bring housing costs down – bringing state and county governments together to tackle issues with land, on infrastructure, and a permitting process that too often stops good projects before they start.
“Right now, families in Hawai‘i are being priced out of the place they call home while Donald Trump drives up costs and unleashes chaos across the country. Derek will be a true partner to Governor Josh Green in that fight, building housing local families can actually afford, repairing neglected infrastructure, and building safe and resilient communities. He came up through the County Council, the State House, and at every stop he has demonstrated steady, honest, and effective leadership. That is why the DLGA is proud to support Derek Kawakami to be Hawai‘i’s next Lt. Governor.”
